CATARACT

Grey cataract/cataract…

…are terms for the eye disease causing the clouding of the eye lens!

Types of cataract include congenital cataract, age-related cataract, traumatic cataract and secondary cataract. The most common type is age-related cataract, as it develops in 60% of the population over the age of 65. The reasons behind its development are still unclear. The risk factors certainly include age, obesity, use of certain medications, an unhealthy lifestyle, etc. However, if a cataract develops in young or middle-aged persons, the most common causes are certain eye diseases or eye injuries that eventually result in cataracts. Congenital cataracts develop in children and can be a consequence of the mother’s viral infection during pregnancy.

Cataracts cause A REDUCTION OF VISUAL ACUITY!

If you cannot clearly distinguish between shades of colour, your vision is blurry, you see double or afterimages during daylight – you are suffering from a cataract.

In order to establish that a patient is suffering from a cataract, visual acuity is determined, a biomicroscopic examination of the eye is performed and intraocular pressure is measured.

It is important to perform a detailed examination of the eye and the condition of the lens, macula and optic nerve.

Using the ZEISS IOL Master 700 device, we determine the power of the intraocular lens to be implanted into the eye. The device has great precision, which is very important because a good determination of lens power allows for more precise post-operative prescription results.
Corneal topography is used for establishing the existence of any abnormalities of the cornea, as well as astigmatism. Ultrasound of the eyeball is also important because it can reveal certain diseases that cannot be seen in case of extremely dense cataracts..

After a complete ophthalmic examination, the doctor will inform you whether you are a candidate for cataract surgery.

The patient often feels changes in the quality of their vision and, based on subjective and objective criteria, the method or procedure to resolve the cataract will be determined.

When the reduction of your visual acuity starts to interfere with your daily activities, it is necessary to perform cataract surgery. Of course, only after an established diagnosis and if the surgery was recommended by an ophthalmologist.

Monofocal intraocular lenses are also called single-focus lenses.

Enables excellent distance vision after implantation, but does not correct astigmatism and it is still necessary to wear reading glasses.

As the person gets older, the need to wear glasses increases.

Monofocal toric intraocular lenses correct astigmatism.

Astigmatism is an abnormal curve of the cornea that causes irregularity and elongation of the image. Such irregularity occurs when the cornea is not spherical but oval, and the image created is not clear or properly focused. Up to 30% of patients or candidates for cataract surgery have this type of refractive error.

The implantation of a toric intraocular lens is a long-term solution for astigmatism and the correction of the image created in the eye.

Multifocal intraocular lenses

These lenses allow good vision without any visual aids at different distances. Multifocal intraocular lenses are also called multi-focus lenses. They have a special design to create several foci at different points, i.e. to enable clear vision at proximity and distance in order to make you completely independent of contact lenses or prescription glasses.

There are 2 types of multifocal intraocular lenses, namely REFRACTIVE and DIFFRACTIVE. Diffractive lenses may be bifocal (for proximity and distance) or trifocal (for proximity, distance and semi-distance, i.e. computer).

The precision of measurement of the IOL power prior to the procedure is of great importance for the successful implantation of a multifocal intraocular lens. The Medić Jukić Eye Clinic provides continuous education to its staff in line with the global trends and performs all of the aforementioned surgical procedures.

We are the only clinic in Croatia with the ZEISS IOL Master 700 device for determining the power of the intraocular lens to be implanted into the eye during cataract surgery.

surgical procedure ophthalmology

Cataract surgery is one of the safest procedures in medicine. It involves a surgical intervention and, due to its frequency, it has become a routine procedure in eye clinics. There are three methods for cataract treatment, namely:

  1. ULTRASOUND SURGERY (phacoemulsification)
  2. CLASSIC SURGERY (extracapsular extraction)
  3. A COMBINATION of the two procedures

The Medić Jukić Eye Clinic uses a special machine for the phacoemulsification of the lens ALCON INFINITI in cataract surgery.

The eyes are prepared using only anaesthetic eye drops and the procedure is completely painless.

The surgical procedure includes a minimal incision (from 1.8 to 2.75 mm) for removing the clouded lens, i.e. cataract. This is performed using an ultrasonic probe and then the artificial, clear lens is implanted. Given that the incision is minimal, the wound heals quickly and there is no need for stitches. The entire procedure lasts from 10 to 15 minutes.

This method of treating eye conditions is available in only a few eye clinics in the region, and the Medić Jukić Eye Clinic is one of them.

Post-operative course

The patient can leave the clinic only 15 minutes after the surgery. It takes 3 to 5 days to be able to perform all activities without interference and for the patient to be able to work. Therapeutic drops are applied for a month after the procedure, and it is recommended to abstain from severe physical work, as well as swimming in pools during this time.

The first examination is scheduled for the day after the procedure, the following one after seven days, and then one month and three months.
